8 Bucket-List Adventures Women Are Checking Off in Their 60s & 70s

Posted: Monday, September 14, 2026

There's a moment in life that many of our women travelers describe the same way: the kids are grown, the calendar finally has room, and a trip they've been dreaming about for twenty years starts to feel a lot more realistic. Maybe it's the hike you always meant to take, the country you've circled on a map more than once, or the walk you've read about for years but never quite carved out the time for.

We've watched hundreds of women in their 60s and 70s make that same shift — from "someday I'll go" to "this year, I'm going." Freed from school schedules, careers, or caregiving, they finally have the time. What they need next is the right support: a well-run group trip, a guide who knows the trail, a lodge with a hot shower waiting at the end of the day. That's the difference between a bucket-list dream staying a dream and becoming a photo on your wall.

Here are eight adventures we see women checking off again and again. These are destinations so remarkable, they're worth making the effort to see in your lifetime.

1. Trekking to Machu Picchu

It's the granddaddy of hiking bucket lists, and for good reason. There's something about following the same stone paths the Inca once walked, climbing through cloud forest and high mountain passes, and then rounding a corner to see the citadel spread out below you. It's the moment you've been picturing since a textbook photo first planted the idea — maybe all the way back in elementary school.

The good news: you don't have to be a mountaineer to earn that view. On our Peruvian Culture: Lares and the Lost City trip, you spend eight nights lodge-to-lodge through the Sacred Valley, with daily options to hike hard or ease into cultural visits with local weaving and farming communities instead. You choose your pace each morning, and Machu Picchu is waiting for everyone at the end.

"This was one of the best trips I have ever been on. The hikes, the lodges, the guides, the food, the bonus hikes and surprises, the amazing women I met, and of course the Peruvian people and culture all added up for a great adventure." — Janine L., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: a view you've spent years imagining, the kind that looks almost too perfect to be real until you're standing in front of it. Plus, you’ll gain a real understanding of the Inca culture and the people who built it.

2. An African Safari

Ask any woman who's been on safari and she'll tell you the same thing: photos don't do it justice. There's a difference between watching a nature documentary and sitting in an open vehicle at dawn while a pride of lions stretches awake twenty feet away. The scale of the Serengeti and the sound of a million wildebeest moving across the plain has a way of resetting your sense of wonder entirely.

Our Tanzania Journey: Ngorongoro Highlands Trek and Wildlife Safari gives you both sides of that experience: several days of trekking through the Ngorongoro Highlands, camping under an enormous sky, and then days of proper safari through Tarangire and the Serengeti, tracking the Big Five from a jeep. It's active where you want to be out exploring on foot, and gloriously laid-back everywhere else, when all you have to do is watch the animals wander by.

"The authenticity of the experiences of this trip allowed me to fully experience and appreciate the remarkable nature and people of Tanzania. Our AGC and local guides each contributed to the intimate and immersive nature of the trip." — Erin C., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: a camera roll full of animal photos you'll never get tired of showing off, and the sounds of the Serengeti still playing in your head months after you're home.

3. Seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland

Not every bucket-list adventure needs to leave you sore the next morning. The Northern Lights belong to a different category entirely. It’s a bucket-list experience more than a physical feat. . You don't need to train for it. You just need to be standing in the right dark place, looking up, and Iceland happens to be one of the best places on earth to do exactly that. Its high northern latitude and long, dark winter nights give the Aurora plenty of room to perform, and its wide-open landscapes away from city lights mean you're rarely fighting light pollution for the view.

Our Iceland: Chasing Lights & Winter Delights trip is built around exactly that. It's six days of glaciers, black sand beaches, and geothermal fields by day, with the Aurora hunt woven into the evenings. You'll walk behind waterfalls, ride an Icelandic horse, and soak in the Blue Lagoon, all without needing to be an expedition athlete. It's a trip that welcomes a wide range of fitness levels and rewards everyone with the same sky.

“Outstanding guide and fun group of women!  We did a little bit of everything on this trip: glacier hiking, visiting waterfalls, riding an Icelandic horse, seeing geysers and relaxing in the Blue Lagoon. Excellent way to experience Iceland!" — Debra R., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: an appreciation for something so stunning you'll struggle to describe it to anyone who wasn't standing there, and memories of an otherworldly landscape you won't shake for a long time.

4. Hiking into the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon earns its place on nearly every bucket list the same way it earns its crowds. You can see a thousand photos of the canyon and still not be prepared for standing at the rim. It's one of the natural wonders of the world for good reason: a mile deep in places, eighteen miles across, with rock layers that trace back nearly two billion years. Millions of people show up every year just to look at it from the top. Fewer ever walk down into it, but we certainly do: switchbacks, red dust, and all.

Our Sedona and the Grand Canyon trip hikes both rims of red rock country, including the Grandview and Hermit trails into the canyon itself. It's rated a 3, with real elevation change and rocky terrain, but it's built for women who've been training and are finally ready to claim the trip they've been putting off.

"The camaraderie that developed among the women on this trip was special. We had amazing guides, very comfortable lodging, and delicious meals. The Southwestern US is an especially beautiful part of this country and to be able to explore it in the company of enthusiastic and appreciative women was a pleasure." —Barbara R., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: red, sandy boots and photos so stunning you'll want to frame them. You’ll have proof you didn't just look at the Grand Canyon; you walked into it.

5. Walking the Camino de Santiago

Of everything on this list, the Camino tends to draw women at a particular kind of crossroads: recently retired, processing a loss, or starting a new chapter. The long walk gives you space to think through and process whatever change life has recently thrown at you. And it's a stunning setting to do it in: history at every turn, wide-open plains, mountains, green hills, and rocky coastline. There's a reason pilgrims have been walking this road for over a thousand years.

Whether you walk the full Camino de Santiago or extend all the way to the Atlantic on Santiago to the Sea: Camino Finisterre, the shape of the experience stays the same. You move from hotel to hotel, four to six hours of walking most days, your luggage transferred ahead of you, and a small group of women walking beside you. The scenery just keeps shifting as you get deeper into the path.

"The Camino de Santiago was an amazing experience! I enjoyed the hike, the beauty of Spain and most of all, the company of the women in our group. This was my first trip with Adventures in Good Company, and also the only guided trip I've ever taken. As the trip neared, I found comfort in the knowledge that I would be traveling in a group and with guides while in a foreign country. In Spain, hiking the Camino de Santiago was beautiful and just challenging enough to make it fun and rewarding." — Jennifer D., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: a Compostela certificate in hand, and a renewed sense of purpose earned mile by mile, over long days of reflection on the trail.

6. Sea Kayaking the Alaskan Coast

Alaska doesn't need to convince anyone it's worth the trip. It's the largest state in the country by a wide margin, and it's home to some of the last truly wild coastline in North America. Glaciers still calve into the sea, and sea otters, seals, and orcas often outnumber the tourists. You don't need to summit anything to feel the state's beauty; you can arrive and be wowed immediately. But we love getting into that scenery a little deeper, especially by sea kayak, because that's where the best wildlife spotting happens.

Our Alaska: The Kenai Peninsula trip puts you in a kayak in Humpy Cove, hiking coastal trails, and cruising Resurrection Bay for wildlife. You’ll glamp in yurts on Orca Island, complete with your own queen bed, a private bathroom, and a deck for watching the midnight sun. It's a trip built for beginners; no previous paddling experience required.

"The Guides were a good team, with very unique personalities, who were fun and worked well together. The food was very good. I really enjoyed being remote in the Yurts. It was a very chill and relaxing trip; yet, our days were packed with activities if we wanted." — Anita B., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: time in a luxury yurt you'll be reminiscing about for years, a camera roll full of glaciers and wildlife, and the kind of relaxation that only comes from time spent in mountain air.

7. Day Hiking the Swiss Alps

The scenery in Switzerland here looks almost exactly like the postcards (but still even better in person). Look around, and you’ll have 360-degree views of tall glacial peaks, wildflower meadows, and glacier-fed lakes. The Via Alpina crosses eight countries, but the Swiss stretch is often considered some of the most scenic hiking in the entire range, with views of legendary mountains like the Eiger and the Jungfrau along the way.

Our Switzerland: Hiking on the Via Alpina trip pairs 2.5 to 5 miles of daily hiking through some of the world’s most photographed mountain scenery with the comfort of a welcoming hotel or inn each night. Two-night stays in Interlaken and Montreux give you more time to experience Swiss culture. We add in cheese tastings, kayaking on Lake Brienz, and a Swiss alphorn lesson to create a well-rounded adventure both on and off the trail.

"This was a true bucket-list trip for me! I was surrounded by scenery that somehow exceeded everything I had imagined. We lucked out with wonderful weather, spectacular views, a fun group, and the most incredible guides—competent, confident, and somehow always making it all look easy." — Nancy K., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: You’ll return with frame-worthy mountain photos that look like stock images, but are entirely your own, and a deeper appreciation for Swiss culture.

8. Island Hopping in Greece

The Cyclades quickly earn a place on any bucket list after you see photos of whitewashed villages perched above brilliant blue water, ancient ruins around every corner, and sunsets over Santorini’s volcanic caldera. Once you experience Greece for yourself, you’ll realize those photos captured only part of its beauty, and barely scratched the surface of its rich history.

Our Island Hopping in the Greek Islands trip takes you through Athens, Paros, Naxos, and Santorini over nine days. Plus, you’ll experience the Acropolis, a Greek cooking class, and sunset over the Caldera. It's rated both a 2 and a 3, so every day gives you a choice between the hike and the easier path, without missing out on any experiences.

"What an incredible place in which to explore, hike, eat and drink, browse markets, learn history, enjoy the beautiful Aegean Sea aboard a catamaran with the opportunity to jump into the refreshing water, all while creating new friendships! This trip to Greece is the perfect balance of hiking, relaxing, and learning. I know this experience is going to live on in “my favorites”.”— Kathy M., AGC Traveler

The takeaway: Sun-warmed afternoons by the Aegean, a camera roll filled with whitewashed villages and caldera sunsets, and a deeper connection to Greece’s rich history.

Your List Is Waiting to Be Crossed Off

Bucket-list trips don’t cross themselves off. Sometimes, all it takes is the simple decision to say yes. From there, we take care of the details that bring your dream adventure to life.

Every woman quoted above started exactly where you are now: reading about a trip, picturing herself there, and deciding it was finally time to go. The Alps, the Serengeti, and the Camino aren’t going anywhere—but neither is “someday” until you turn it into a date on the calendar.

Nancy, who recently said yes to her own bucket-list trip through the Swiss Alps, put it better than we could:

"I think more women should say yes to their dream trips because waiting for the perfect travel companion, the perfect time, or until you feel completely comfortable can mean never going at all. There is something incredibly empowering about deciding that you want to have an experience and making it happen." — Nancy, AGC Traveler

So, take another look at your list. Which destination has been waiting the longest? Chances are, we have an adventure that fits what you’ve been dreaming about—with a group of enthusiastic women and expert guides ready to experience it alongside you.

Browse all AGC adventures and say yes to the trip you’ve been looking forward to for years.
