Tourism in Iceland has been booming lately but most of it confined to the area around Reykjavik and the south coast. Fortunately there are many other fascinating parts of Iceland that are less visited and equally compelling - perhaps even more so. The western Fjords, the peninsula at the very top of Iceland, seem only slightly changed from the time they were a center of the fishing industry. Characterized by fjords that rival Norway, the name is well-deserved. The Lake Myvatn area, long known for its magnificent wildlife and geothermal marvels, is completely different and equally fascinating. Our knowledge of the landscape is enhanced by 2 - 3 hour hikes in the areas we visit. Visiting Iceland at midsummer ensures plenty wildlife and plenty of daylight! Maximum group size: 14

I was concerned about how cold it might be. The weather was not forgiving with rain and winds so that dampened the experience. Also, the fact that the trip confirmed that my health has affected my ability to hike well, and the guides had to help me on several occasions. That also dampened my experience. The Iceland guide was terrific as well as Brenda. I enjoyed crossing the creek and the quick response when I banged my head on a lava (standing) rock on the first hike. The 6 hour ride on the van was a real downer. Cut that out. Also add the tour of the Concert Hall in the capital as part of the trip around the center.
The highlights for me were the extraordinary trip guides, unbelievable nature, and meeting interesting women.
highlight: being in the wide open beautiful wilderness of Hesteryi lowlight: waiting often for transportation much time driving
I loved the hiking and overnight at "The Doctor's House." I think it was special for everyone, and because of the rating of this trip, might be a better option than camping.
Highlight hands down is the West fjord hiking. Would add another day up there and lose one of the following days of basically bus touring. WAY TOO much time on that bus. One day was 10 hours!!!
Loved the varity of places. Hotels were clean and comfortable. Arrangements went well, amazing since we mived each day. Best part: local guides were wonderful!! We loved hearing local point of view. Fellow travelers were interesting and enthusiastic. Bus kept breaking down, so a bit frustrating. Hiking a bit more challenging than some expected so appreciate the opportunity for a Plan B!
While I knew there would be hiking, I did not expect something described as level 2 to be so physically demanding. In addition, I had called the office to discuss my concerns about a knee injury. I was advised that Iceland's "rolling hills" were not likely to create a problem. As it turned it out, I was able to manage the one hike that involved rolling hills. But most hikes were steep climbs, along with rocky ground
