Women's Guide to International Travel: 7 Essential Tips for a Smooth Journey

Posted: Monday, June 23, 2025

The busy summer tourism season is upon us, and the coming seasons are full of ideal opportunities to get out and explore. Whether it's your first big trip in a while or just your next adventure, here are seven important ways to plan ahead for a smoother journey.

Check your passport

The last thing you want is to arrive at the airport and be turned away because your passport has expired or is set to expire within 3-6 months of your trip return date. Most countries require passports to be valid for several months AFTER your scheduled return date, so take a look. If it expires six months or less than when you return, get it renewed ASAP!

Visit your doctor and/or a travel clinic at least a month before you depart

Bring your itinerary with you and have your doctor review the activities and the recommended or required vaccinations for the destination. A travel medicine physician can provide personalized advice based on your health history and trip plans.

Review the packing list

If you need to purchase gear or specific travel clothing, order it early so you can try it on, return it, or exchange it if necessary. You will want to ensure everything fits comfortably before packing. For hiking shoes, especially, break them in BEFORE you go! Consider ordering extra contact lenses, medications, or other essential personal items well in advance.

Book flights with flexibility

Flight schedules and staffing can still be unpredictable, so review cancellation and change policies before booking. When possible, book early morning and direct flights. If you have a layover, give yourself at least  3 hours between connections.. Once booked, download the airline’s app to manage check-in, get real-time updates, and plan for in-flight meals and entertainment.

Plan for how you will communicate

WhatsApp allows you to call and text internationally for free—ask your key contacts to download it too. Google Translate is an excellent tool for language assistance; it helps people understand and express keywords and phrases. It also allows you to use your camera to translate signs and menus. Download these apps before you go so you’re ready to use them.

Get Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can provide peace of mind and protect you in the event of trip delays, interruptions, or medical emergencies abroad. At AGC, we recommendand offer policies through Travelex Insurance Services. Be sure to review what's covered, including medical care and post-departure benefits, such as trip delay or baggage loss.

Lighten your wallet

Many retailers now accept  “tap to pay” options. Add 1-2 major credit cards to your phone’s mobile wallet and try using them before your trip. If you’re traveling with others, apps like Venmomake it easy to split shared costs. While it’s still smart to carry a bit of local currency and emergency cash, the days of traveling with money stashed away in belts or bras are gone.

While travel has undergone significant changes over the last few years, one piece of advice that remains timeless is to pack plenty of patience and flexibility. Travel always brings the potential for the unexpected—but that's part of the adventure. With a bit of preparation, patience, and flexibility, you’ll be ready to make the most of your journey and savor every experience along the way.
